What is a Retractable Flyscreen
A retractable flyscreen is a practical solution for uPVC double-glazed windows and doors. It protects against insects and dust. The screen is installed in a cassette placed either at the top or side of the window frame. When needed, the mesh is pulled out using a handle and fixed in place. Once released, it rolls back into the cassette automatically, remaining out of sight.
How the Retraction Mechanism Works
Simple and Functional System
The mesh is wound around a spring-loaded roller inside the cassette. When you pull the handle, the mesh extends to cover the open part of the window. Letting go of the handle allows the spring to retract the screen smoothly into the cassette. This protects the mesh from damage and helps it last longer.
Cassette Installation
The cassette can be installed in two ways:
- At the top of the window – for vertical retraction
- On the side – for horizontal retraction
The choice depends on the window’s design and the user’s needs. The cassette and side tracks are made of powder-coated aluminium, which makes them durable and resistant to outdoor conditions.
Advantages of a Retractable Flyscreen
- Hidden when not in use – the screen stays inside the cassette and doesn’t affect the appearance of the window
- Easy to use – pull to extend, release to retract, no tools needed
- Insect protection – fine mesh blocks even small bugs
- Long-lasting – materials resist UV exposure and moisture
Materials and Specifications
Mesh
The mesh is made from a strong synthetic material with a polyester coating, such as uPVC. It resists tearing and sun damage. Most screens come in grey or black, offering good outward visibility with minimal shading.
Cassette and Tracks
The aluminium parts are powder-coated to prevent corrosion and physical damage. The colour palette can be matched to the colour of the window frame for a neat finish.

Cleaning and Maintenance
To keep the screen in working condition, clean the side tracks regularly using a soft brush or vacuum cleaner. The mesh can be wiped with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid using abrasive tools or harsh chemicals.
